Compare systems by purpose—not cartridge count
Start with the water source and the result you want. Then compare verified reduction claims, flow, capacity, replacement schedule, installation requirements and total ownership cost.
Key questions to ask
- What is the water source and intended use?
- Which specific substances or characteristics is the product rated to address?
- What flow and capacity does the household require?
- How often are cartridges replaced, and what do they cost?
- Can the system be isolated and accessed easily for servicing?
Why specifications matter
No filter removes everything. Performance claims should be assessed against product documentation, relevant certification and the stated operating conditions. Installation and maintenance must also follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Melbourne context
Victorian health guidance states that Melbourne’s treated drinking water is safe and generally does not need further filtration. Some households still choose a filter for taste or odour preferences. Private water sources require a different risk-based approach.
